A 9-to-5, At-work adventure on the Mighty Mississippi

This Wednesday (also know as tomorrow) Zannel, along with Cordarounds.com, embarks on another 9 to 5 adventure that will transport cube confined professionals on a day long virtual escape to America’s mightiest, and currently swollen, waterway – The Mississippi.

Leading the voyage is video blogger, Bill Bowles, who’s taking the entire summer to float the length of the Mississippi. He’ll be welcoming viewers to participate in a typical river workday at Evangeline Inc. (the name of his homemade pontoon boat). Water cooler gossip, conference calls, and encounters with the rogue Evangeline IT specialist are all on tap for a day at this floating workplace. And vigilant viewers might even win a lovely, and phonetically challenging, t-shirt from the crazed designers at cordarounds.com.

Watch it all here:

Previous 9-5 adventures have goaded San Franciscans into ditching work to join the Pied Piper of Booze on a day-long bender. Another interactively tracked down a Valentine’s day date for a single woman. And we’ll just have to see what happens at this floating office drifting in the middle of America’s iconic waterway. We sincerely hope no one gets fired…

Series B Closed - Zannel marches forward

You can read all the press friendly details in today’s Series B press release, but the big news is that we’ve officially closed our second round of financing with Alloy Ventures joining our series A investors - U.S. Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures - with a total of 10 million dollars in new investment.

Needless to say, we’re thrilled to have Alloy joining the Zannel team. The new investment is going to enable us to accelerate our forward momentum and expansion in the mobile space, and keep those new features and platform improvements coming at a furious pace. Or, in the much more eloquent words of Zannel’s CTO Braxton Woodham, “We’ve just begun to scratch the surface of mobile’s potential, and will continue to pioneer new ways for our users to stay connected via their mobile devices.”

Sometimes it just takes a quote from your CTO to make it all sound nice, but, suffice it to say, we are genuinely thrilled to be moving forward with such a great new investing partner as the mobile space gears up for massive growth in the coming years.

Zannel’s Open Developer API - What it all means

This week we launched an open API that allows developers to leverage the power and functionality of Zannel’s platform to create media-rich mobile applications, widgets and innovative mashups. You can read the PR flavored details in our API press release, but to really understand what the API release means, here’s Bain, a developer who actually used the open API to create a Mac dashboard widget:

It’s fun to see what an unshaven developer, an open API, a little code, and a healthy dose of caffeine can do.

If you’re a developer, and want to learn more about the open API, go to: www.zannel.com/developers.
If you’d like to use Bain’s nifty ZannelBuddy, head here: ZannelBuddy

Feed your zannel to twitter and flickr

Zannel is all about sharing your mobile video, picture and text updates in as many places as possible with as many people as you want. Obviously, the embeddable zannel widget and the Facebook application are great ways to get your updates out there, but, like ice cream, sometimes you just want more.

That’s why we’ve launched zannel feeds. Now posts you make to zannel can automatically appear in your flickr or twitter accounts. If you post an update to zannel and you have zannel feeds active, twitter will display the text as well as a links your picture or videos, and Flicker just receives your mobile picture updates. You can append your feed to flicker with any tags you want and apply whatever flickr privacy settings you’d like.

To start your twitter or flickr feeds from zannel, log in and click on your “account settings” on either the wap or the web version of zannel. There you’ll find a section for “zannel feeds” where you can configure your twitter and flickr export options.

So, save yourself all those extra uploads and use zannel to instantly feed your updates everywhere.

Karenthe13th – A live love experiment

On Wednesday, Feb 13th 2008, a single San Francisco woman ditched work in favor of finding a Valentines date. Mind you, not just any sort of date, but one brought to her by followers on zannel, facebook, and a dedicated hoard of horizontal corduroy enthusiasts at cordarounds.com.

Here’s how the ambitious love quest began:

From there, the oh so sharply attired woman, Karen, got suggestions from eager event enthusiasts for potential Valentines Day matches. She zoomed around the not too foggy city on Segways and in Taxis in her quest to meet a nice guy to hit the town with.

The entire day was documented as it happened with instant mobile updates as well as with a few smartly edited video segments (compiled by Bill Bowles, creator of the infamous mynameisbill.com). Altogether it was a live, unscripted soap opera that folks followed on their phones and discreetly from their desks at work. Check out the Karenthe13th page on zannel to watch how the whole day unfolded.

Zanneling on an iPhone just got a lot better

We at zannel have been big fans of Apple’s sleek and elegantly interfaced iPhone. In fact, there were a few near wrestling matches amongst us zannel employees when it came time to take our demo handsets home for the weekend. While wrestling with coworkers over the latest technology can be fun, we quickly realized a more productive use of our efforts would be to develop a special zannel application to take advantage of the iPhone’s best features.

And we’re happy to announce that our iPhone application is now available on all iPhones that navigate to zannel.com. The application requires no download and launches instantly, and users will get the best of zannel presented in a unique, iPhone friendly interface with tabs and elegant navigation tools. It really showcases how, unlike traditional WAP sites, a mobile web interface can retain sophisticated design elements commonly found on the Web.

Here’s a little peek at what it looks like:

So, what are you waiting for? Start zanneling on your iPhone!
